TAB Reading

To easily read and write music, guitar players use a number system known as tablature (TAB for short). TAB is made up of six horizontal lines each representing a guitar string. The thinnest string (high e) is the top line, and the thickest string (low E) is the bottom line, and the notes run in the order EADGBe like so:

In the tab example below, the open A string is played first (not fretted). Next, the 2nd fret of the D string is played, followed by the 4th fret of the D string. After this, the open G and B strings with the e string at the 3rd fret are played at the same time.

This example ends with a powerchord, played by fretting the 5th fret of the A string and the 7th fret of the D string at the same time. The image below shows how the fingers of the fretting and picking hands are referred to:

Note: This is a diagram for a "right pick handed" guitarist. If you play guitar the other way the opposite applies. The PIMAC naming system for the pick hand is used in TAB for fingerstyle guitar playing.

Every video lesson in TastyRiffs will have a TAB available for viewing and printing in .PDF format.
