Choosing Your First Guitar - Acoustic or Electric?

If you don't know much about guitars, or how an electric, acoustic or 12-string guitar sound, you should watch this video where I demonstrate the three. I always get asked: What type of guitar is it best to start with - acoustic or electric? I usually say it depends on the person and the guitar!

It is easiest to learn on an electric guitar, because generally the strings are easier to push down and bend, and both clean and overdrive tones are available via the amp. This also means you will have to buy an amp to go with your guitar, but this need not be expensive for a beginner, as there are many cheap practice amps available with quality tone.

Learning with an acoustic guitar will make the switch to an electric an easy task, but holding chords in the beginning may hurt your fingers. Also, if you know what type of music you want to play, this should help your decision: rock and metal = electric, Jack Johnson = acoustic.

The guitars I play in this video are "clickable" if you would like to learn more about them or perhaps purchase your own!
