Notes Across The A String In Western music there are 12 different notes. It is very important to know the sequence of these notes and how they run across the guitar so you will know what type of chord you are playing, or what key your scale is in. On the A string it looks like this:
It is helpful for a beginner to remember that 3--5--7 on the A string corresponds to C--D--E.
Sharps and Flats In music, the # sign is pronounced sharp, to sharpen a note means to take it up by a semitone (ex. the sharp of F is F#, the sharp of F# is G, etc). The b sign in music is pronounced flat, to flatten a note means to take it down by a semitone (ex. the flat of C is B, and the flat of B is A#). Note that Cb = B and Bb = A#, Gb = F# and F#b=F, but in music we only talk in terms of one or the other, and on TastyRiffs.com, we use the sharps. |
