Strumming in Time (Part 1)

Lets use some of the open chords you just learned to work on your rhythm guitar playing. In this video we will hold an E major chord (try other chords too!) to learn how to strum different types of notes. The most common musical timing is called 4/4, and it means there are 4 beats per bar of music. The most common types of notes and their timing are:

Whole notes last for four beats and are strummed using downstrokes (1 whole note per bar).

Half notes last for two beats and are strummed using downstrokes (2 half notes per bar).

Quarter notes last for one beat and are strummed using downstrokes (4 quarter notes per bar).

Eighth notes last for half a beat, so 2 eighth notes per beat are played by strumming down-up (8 per bar) .

Sixteenth notes last for a quarter of a beat, so 4 sixteenth notes per beat are played by strumming down-up-down-up.
